By Us, With Us, For Us, or To Us contains the reflections of a social justice educator on the effort to lead a democratic turnaround of an elementary school in a district aiming to be the most improved urban school district in the U.S.
Simple, right? Less work--once a month vs. weekly, right? More reflection, less rote compliance, right? Gives us all a sense of what teachers value in their teaching and planning--good information for moving forward with the turnaround, right?
At the end of most interviews, the candidate gets to ask a question. I wanted to be strategic with my one shot. So, I asked the superintendent, “Will this turnaround work be done by us, with us, for us, or to us?”
